Tela de Vidas / Fabric of Lives
2015
Tela de Vidas (Fabric of Lives) was completed during a two-month artist residency at JIWAR in the Gracia neighborhood of Barcelona, Spain. Over 50 participants--solicited from local cafes, bars and shops in Gracia, and via the internet---were invited to contribute a personal piece of clothing or fabric with a related story, written in their own words. Their photos and texts exist as digital prints on fabric, along with the giant fabric collage of donated clothing. Participants were widely diverse, including immigrants from various countries and cultures as well as Gracia locals. Their words attest to the power of stories to create bridges of understanding between vastly different individuals and experiences.
